New Fiber Optic Tech for AI Unveiled
Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (YOFC) is set to unveil a new Hollow-Core Fibre (HCF) solution at MWC Barcelona. The company claims the next-generation technology will provide the ultra-low latency optical communication needed to strengthen global AI infrastructure, positioning fiber as a critical component in the AI race.
Hollow-core fiber (HCF) transmits data through an air-filled or vacuum channel instead of a solid glass core. This design allows light to travel at nearly its vacuum speed, reducing latency by approximately 30-33% compared to conventional silica-core fibers. For AI data centers, this speed increase can expand the maximum distance between facilities by 50%. The technology virtually eliminates nonlinear effects common in glass fiber, which can distort signals, especially at high power levels. This allows for higher-fidelity signals and the ability to transmit high-powered lasers without degrading the signal, a key factor for data-intensive AI workloads. The latest generation of HCF also shows significantly lower backscatter and signal loss than traditional fibers. Major cloud providers are already deploying HCF. Microsoft has been a key player, acquiring HCF pioneer Lumenisity in 2022 and since improving the technology to achieve signal loss lower than traditional glass fibers. Comcast and euNetworks have also run successful commercial trials for internet services and to connect data centers. These deployments are primarily focused on metro-scale connections between AI data centers. Despite its advantages, HCF faces challenges in manufacturing costs, scalability, and the need for specialized splicing and connector tools. The technology is also more mechanically sensitive than conventional fiber, and a lack of established industry standards complicates large-scale integration. YOFC, which holds a global market share lead in traditional fiber preforms, is now entering this specialized market to address the growing demand from AI infrastructure.
