Google Overhauls Algorithm for AI Era

Google's latest algorithm update is a major push for its E-E-A-T framework — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust. The change specifically targets the authenticity of AI-generated content, forcing marketers to merge technical SEO with credible, human-centric narratives. This signals a critical research opportunity to measure the real-world impact of E-E-A-T signals on consumer trust and campaign performance.

This algorithm update is the latest step in a multi-year trajectory, evolving from foundational changes like Panda (2011) which targeted thin content, and Penguin (2012) which demoted manipulative link schemes. The explicit addition of "Experience" to the framework in late 2022 was a direct countermeasure to the rise of scalable AI content, designed to reward insights that can only come from firsthand use or lived experience. While not a direct ranking factor, E-E-A-T is the framework used by Google's human Search Quality Raters, whose feedback trains the core ranking algorithms. Signals that inform this evaluation include detailed author biographies with credentials, original case studies, and transparent contact information. The emphasis on E-E-A-T is strategically linked to the rollout of Google's AI Overviews. Content that demonstrates strong E-E-A-T signals is more likely to be selected and cited in the AI-generated summaries that now appear at the top of search results pages. The February 2026 core update, which finished rolling out on February 14, created significant ranking volatility. Early data indicated that niche authority websites with deep, expert-led content saw performance gains, while sites relying on more generic, summarized information experienced notable declines.
