Procode AI Launches with $4M for Medical Billing

AI startup Procode Inc. has launched from stealth with $4 million in funding to tackle revenue cycle management (RCM) for surgeons. The company also acquired The Auctus Group, a leading U.S. biller for plastic surgeons. The move signals growing investment in specialized, AI-powered solutions for legacy industries.

Procode AI was founded in 2024 by Jeff Cripe, Dr. Kameron Rezzadeh, and James Baez-Silva. The $4 million investment round was led by Story Ventures and included participation from CHAP Health Ventures, Progression Fund, and Dmitry Shevelenko, the Chief Business Officer of Perplexity. The acquisition of The Auctus Group provides Procode AI with an established base in the plastic surgery billing sector. This strategic move allows the company to immediately apply and refine its AI models on a large, specialized dataset, addressing a niche with complex coding and billing requirements. Revenue cycle management (RCM) is a critical pain point for private practices, which often struggle with high claim denial rates and administrative overhead. Hospitals in the U.S. lose an estimated $20 billion annually due to claim denials, highlighting the significant market opportunity for efficiency-driving AI solutions. AI is being applied to RCM to automate tasks like medical coding, where natural language processing can assign codes with up to 95% accuracy. Machine learning algorithms also enable predictive analytics to identify claims at high risk of denial before they are even submitted, shifting the process from reactive to proactive. For surgeons, billing is particularly complex due to the intricate nature of procedures, the need for detailed documentation, and evolving ICD-10 and CPT codes. AI tools can streamline this by extracting relevant information from medical records and ensuring accurate code assignment, which is crucial for timely reimbursement. The broader trend sees AI moving beyond simple automation (RPA) to handle more complex RCM tasks that traditionally required human judgment. This includes managing intricate denial situations and personalizing patient billing and follow-up, which helps improve collections and patient satisfaction.
