OpenAI Delays ChatGPT 'Adult Mode'

OpenAI has once again delayed the launch of its anticipated "adult mode," which would have offered less-restricted conversations for verified users. The company stated it's shifting priorities to focus on core intelligence and usability, highlighting the ongoing tension between user demand and safety.

This isn't the first time the feature has been pushed back. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman initially announced the "adult mode" in October 2025 with a target launch of December 2025, which was later postponed to the first quarter of 2026. The current delay is indefinite, with the company citing a need to focus on core AI improvements. The primary technical hurdle is creating a robust age-verification system to prevent access by minors. OpenAI has been developing age-prediction tools that analyze account age and usage patterns, but these are not yet considered sufficient. An internal "code red" declared in December also reportedly shifted company priorities back to the fundamental user experience. The proposed mode would be an opt-in experience for verified adults, allowing for the generation of mature content like erotica. It wouldn't be a separate model but an adjustment of content policies for age-gated users. Sleuths digging into ChatGPT's code found references to the feature under the name "Naughty Chats." The project has faced internal headwinds. A former OpenAI employee reportedly claimed they were fired after raising concerns about the feature's potential mental health impacts and the risk of teen access. An expert advisory council on well-being and AI, formed by OpenAI, also allegedly urged the company to reconsider the launch. This delay highlights a central tension in the AI industry: balancing user demand for fewer restrictions against the immense technical and ethical challenges of content moderation. Competitors have also stumbled here, with Elon Musk's Grok AI facing criticism for features that could generate non-consensual explicit content. By pausing the rollout, OpenAI is prioritizing engineering resources on what it calls "personality improvements, personalization, and making the experience more proactive" for its broader user base. An OpenAI spokesperson stated, "We still believe in the principle of treating adults like adults, but getting the experience right will take more time."
