Quest Diagnostics Launches AI Companion
Quest Diagnostics has introduced an AI companion to help patients understand their lab results. The new feature, based on Google's Gemini, can analyze up to five years of personal lab data to explain results and identify potential health risks.
The AI companion is integrated into Quest's existing free patient portal, MyQuest, and is available to all adult users. It functions as an interactive chat feature designed to help users formulate questions for their healthcare providers based on their results. This launch is the product of a collaboration with Google Cloud that began in March 2025. The tool is specifically powered by Google's Gemini family of AI models to analyze health data and generate explanations. A key design feature is its operation within the secure, HIPAA-compliant MyQuest platform. This architecture prevents the need for patients to manually input sensitive lab results into public AI tools, addressing significant data privacy concerns. The development tackles a documented issue in healthcare: a 2023 study in the JAMA Internal Medicine found that 60% of patients misinterpret their own lab results. This can lead to unnecessary anxiety or missed warning signs. AI-driven interpretation aims to translate complex medical terminology into plain language and detect patterns across multiple tests that might otherwise be missed by a patient. The goal is to empower individuals to have more informed discussions with their doctors, not to replace medical advice. Quest explicitly states the AI companion is for educational purposes only. It does not provide a diagnosis or recommend treatment, serving as a support tool to assist patients and providers, rather than replacing the judgment of a healthcare professional.
