Intel reclaims Irish fab stake

Intel announced a $14.2 billion buyback of its stake in its Ireland chip fabrication facility, a move positioned as regaining control over capacity to meet surging AI chip demand. Industry commentary frames the buyback as a signal that chipmakers are shifting from austerity to active capacity control amid tight supply. (digitimes.com)

Intel and Apollo Global Management signed a deal on April 1, 2026 for Intel to repurchase the 49% equity interest in the joint venture that runs Fab 34 in Leixlip, Ireland, returning the plant to sole Intel ownership. (newsroom.intel.com) Apollo had acquired that 49% stake in 2024 for $11.2 billion to provide outside capital to Intel, and Intel said the original structure supplied “equity-like capital while preserving balance sheet strength.” (newsroom.intel.com) Fab 34 is Intel’s high-volume manufacturing site in Leixlip that currently produces chips on the Intel 4 and Intel 3 process nodes; a “process node” is a generation of manufacturing technology where a lower number generally indicates smaller transistor features and better performance per watt. (newsroom.intel.com) That facility was the first in Europe to use extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) lithography in mass production; EUV is a type of machine that uses very short-wavelength light to print much finer circuit patterns onto silicon wafers than older tools can. (newsroom.intel.com) Operationally, full ownership means Intel now controls scheduling and capacity allocation at Fab 34 — i.e., it can decide which chip designs run on the tools, how many wafer starts the fab runs, and how quickly production ramps for specific processors used in AI workloads. (finance.yahoo.com) Intel said the transaction will be funded from cash on hand plus roughly $6.5 billion of new debt, the repurchase price exceeds the 2024 sale price by about $3 billion, and investors pushed the stock up roughly 9% on the announcement.
