Vaporwave as a genre is deeply rooted in internet culture of the early 2010s, emerging from online communities on platforms like Turntable.fm, Reddit, and 4chan. Its aesthetic is a collage of 1980s and 1990s imagery, including early computer graphics, Roman busts, and Japanese text, creating a sense of nostalgia for a past that never quite existed. This visual style is as crucial to the genre as the music itself. The genre's sound is often characterized by its use of chopped and slowed-down samples from 1980s and 1990s smooth jazz, R&B, and lounge music. One of the most influential albums, "Floral Shoppe" by Macintosh Plus (an alias of Ramona Xavier), is often cited as a cornerstone of the genre. Its track “リサフランク420 / 現代のコンピュー” famously samples Diana Ross's "It's Your Move," and the album's cover art, with its Greco-Roman bust and Japanese text, became a widely recognized symbol of the vaporwave aesthetic. Vaporwave is often interpreted as a critique or parody of consumer capitalism and the technological utopianism of previous decades. The name itself is a play on "vaporware," a term for products that are announced but never released, hinting at the unfulfilled promises of a hyper-commercialized world. The music and visuals often evoke a feeling of melancholic nostalgia and the uncanny sense of wandering through a deserted shopping mall. Over time, vaporwave has splintered into numerous subgenres. Mallsoft uses ambient sounds to create the atmosphere of a shopping center, while Future Funk is a more energetic and dance-oriented take on the genre, sampling from 1980s Japanese City Pop. Other offshoots include Vaportrap, which blends vaporwave with trap music, and Utopian Virtual, inspired by the sounds of early simulation video games.
