Paramount Reorgs Tech to Fight Netflix

Paramount, under David Ellison, is shuffling its engineering leadership in a direct bid to close the technology gap with Netflix. The restructuring aims to reallocate senior talent and accelerate product delivery, highlighting the intense competitive pressure in the streaming wars.

The restructuring is a direct initiative from David Ellison to remake Paramount into a "tech-forward" company, blending Hollywood creativity with Silicon Valley innovation. This move is seen as critical by leadership, with one executive noting that improving streaming tech is at "the very top of Dave's priority list of things that he has to solve". The urgency comes as Paramount's 77.7 million streaming subscribers significantly trail industry leaders. A key internal goal is the unification of Paramount+ and Pluto TV onto a single technology platform, a project internally dubbed "convergence". This technical consolidation is a top priority for the first quarter and is foundational to their strategy. The effort is also anticipatory, preparing for a potential merger of Paramount+ and HBO Max, which would create a combined subscriber base of over 200 million. The engineering reorganization combines the Paramount+ Global Quality Engineering team with the Pluto TV Software Test Engineering unit. This new, unified group is structured around five "core pillars": Client Experience, Backend Services, Readiness & Release, Data Quality, and QE Innovation. Each pillar is headed by a director or senior director to create clearer ownership and deeper technical specialization. This strategic shift follows the departure of Paramount Streaming's Chief Product and Technology Officer, Vibol Hou, in January 2026. The new structure under VP of Engineering Victor Marinelli is designed to improve AI enablement and automated testing across the board. The stated goals are to strengthen accountability and ensure quality becomes a strategic advantage as the business scales.
