The trek to Acatenango's summit is a strenuous climb to 13,045 feet (3,976 meters), with an elevation gain of over 5,000 feet in a relatively short distance. Most hikers spread the journey over two days, taking about five to seven hours to reach the base camp where they spend the night. While Acatenango itself has been dormant since 1972, the main attraction is its highly active neighbor, Volcán de Fuego. From the vantage point on Acatenango, hikers get a front-row seat to Fuego's frequent eruptions, which can occur every 15 to 20 minutes, launching lava and ash into the sky. The primary dangers on the hike are not from eruptions but from the environment itself. Altitude sickness is a common issue due to the rapid ascent, and weather conditions can be extreme and change without warning. Temperatures at the overnight camp frequently drop below freezing, even in the dry season. These cold conditions have proven fatal. In January 2017, a sudden drop in temperature led to the deaths of six climbers from hypothermia. This incident underscores the importance of proper acclimatization and cold-weather gear for all hikers. A powerful eruption of Fuego in June 2018 caused the deaths of nearly 200 people in communities at its base, highlighting the immense power of the volcano being observed. Tour operators maintain campsites on Acatenango at a distance deemed safe from Fuego's pyroclastic flows and debris. For the most favorable conditions, hikers typically choose the dry season, which runs from November to April. This period generally offers clearer skies and better trail conditions, increasing the chances of witnessing unobstructed volcanic displays.
