Minnesota Electricians: Focus on 2020 NEC

For Minnesota electricians prepping for licensing, the key is the 2020 National Electrical Code, not the newer 2023 version. A new YouTube video summarizes the specific 2020 NEC updates adopted by the state, including expanded GFCI rules and clearer provisions for home EV charger circuits. This distinction is critical for passing exams and field inspections.

The Minnesota Board of Electricity formally adopted the 2020 National Electrical Code on November 17, 2020. Unlike some other building codes, the state adopts the NEC whole, without any specific Minnesota amendments. Licensing exams, however, did not switch over to the new 2020 material until January 1, 2021. To become a licensed electrical contractor in Minnesota, a business must designate a responsible individual who holds an active master electrician license. That individual must be an owner or a W-2 employee and cannot act as the responsible person for any other contractor. The business must also provide proof of liability and workers' compensation insurance and secure a $25,000 surety bond. The path to a master electrician license requires at least 60 months of practical experience. This experience must cover planning, laying out, supervising, and installing electrical wiring and equipment for light, heat, and power. Minnesota has reciprocity agreements for master electrician licenses with Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. While the focus for current licensing is the 2020 NEC, the Minnesota Board of Electricity has already adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code. That new code went into effect for all electrical permits filed on or after July 1, 2023, with licensing exams transitioning to the 2023 NEC on July 17, 2023. To maintain a master or journeyman license, electricians must complete 16 hours of continuing education every two years. At least 12 of those hours must be directly related to the National Electrical Code to ensure electricians stay current with the latest standards.
