A man accused of stealing a UPS truck in Fremont barricaded himself inside it for about four hours before police arrested him early Thursday. (ktvu.com) Fremont police said officers got calls around 1:30 a.m. on April 23 about a delivery truck being driven erratically in the 5500 block of Cushing Parkway. The driver led officers on a brief pursuit before the truck became disabled on Grimmer Boulevard north of Auto Mall Parkway. (ktvu.com, cbsnews.com) Police said UPS confirmed the truck had been stolen, and officers initially received unconfirmed information that the suspect might be armed. Fremont’s Special Response Team, the department’s tactical unit, responded and negotiated with him while traffic was shut down near Grimmer Boulevard and Doane Street. (ktvu.com, cbsnews.com) The standoff ended just before 6 a.m., when the suspect climbed out and surrendered, according to police. KTVU identified him as 27-year-old Rafael Taniguchi Garcia of Union City. (ktvu.com) Police said no force was used during the arrest. Garcia was taken to a hospital after complaining of a headache, medically cleared, and then booked into Santa Rita Jail. (ktvu.com) The case fits a pattern Fremont police have documented in other stolen delivery-truck cases. In January 2025, officers arrested a 33-year-old Fremont man after a chase in a stolen delivery truck that police said contained an accessible firearm. (patch.com) Fremont police also publish a public crime map that tracks reported incidents over the previous 180 days, including theft-related cases. The department says the map is updated daily and is intended to give residents a current snapshot of crime by block area. (fremontpolice.gov) Garcia was booked on charges that police said include unlawful taking or driving of a vehicle, felony reckless evading, and resisting a peace officer. The truck theft ended where it stalled: on Grimmer Boulevard, with officers surrounding the cab until the driver finally came out. (ktvu.com)
