Nipsey Hussle Gets LA Street
Los Angeles city officials announced that the intersection of Slauson and Crenshaw will be officially renamed after the late Nipsey Hussle. The move preserves hip-hop history and highlights Hussle's enduring legacy as both an artist and activist in the neighborhood that shaped his life and music.
- The official renaming to "Nipsey Hussle Square" took place at a dedication ceremony on Saturday, February 28, 2026. The event was attended by local leaders and the rapper's brother, Samiel "Blacc Sam" Asghedom. - A Change.org petition started by the non-profit organization Project Islamic H.O.P.E. was instrumental in the renaming effort, gathering hundreds of thousands of signatures in just a few days. - The intersection was the site of Hussle's Marathon Clothing store, which he opened in 2017. He had purchased the entire shopping plaza where the store is located to invest in his community. - Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, was tragically shot and killed outside the Marathon store on March 31, 2019. Eric Holder Jr. was convicted of his murder and sentenced to 60 years in prison. - Beyond the store, Hussle co-founded Vector 90, a co-working space and STEM incubator in the Crenshaw district designed to create opportunities for local youth. - He was a key figure in the Destination Crenshaw project, a 1.3-mile open-air museum celebrating Black arts and culture along Crenshaw Boulevard. - The day before his death, Hussle was scheduled to meet with the LAPD and Roc Nation to discuss ways to curb gang violence in South Los Angeles. - This is not the first honor of its kind for the late artist; the nearby Hyde Park Metro station was temporarily renamed Nipsey Hussle Station for what would have been his 40th birthday.
