Iran Retaliates, War Widens
Iran has unleashed a missile barrage on Israel and Gulf states, vowing “massive retaliation” after the assassination of Supreme Leader Khamenei. Explosions have rocked Tehran for a second day as the conflict rapidly escalates. While former President Trump claimed a diplomatic deal will now be "easy," Iran is publicly preparing for Khamenei's funeral and signaling further military action.
The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader for nearly three decades, has triggered a constitutional process to choose his successor. This is only the second time such a transition has occurred since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The first was in 1989 when Khamenei himself succeeded Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. An 88-member body of senior clerics known as the Assembly of Experts is tasked with selecting the new supreme leader. This assembly, whose members are elected by popular vote for eight-year terms, holds the authority to appoint, supervise, and even dismiss the supreme leader. The most recent election for this assembly was held in 2024. In the interim, a temporary leadership council will assume the duties of the supreme leader. This council is composed of Iran's president, the head of the judiciary, and a cleric from the Guardian Council. Senior cleric Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has been named as the jurist member of this interim council. The selection process for the next supreme leader is conducted through private deliberations within the Assembly of Experts, where candidates are assessed on their religious scholarship and political acumen. While several names have been speculated as potential successors, including Khamenei's son Mojtaba, there is no single, dominant figure expected to easily match Khamenei's authority.
