Qatar PM Describes "Betrayal" After Iranian Attacks

Qatar's Prime Minister described a "big sense of betrayal" following Iranian missile attacks, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. He emphasized the importance of stakeholder trust and communication even under challenging circumstances, and this highlights the need for clear incident response workflows.

Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani has voiced strong condemnation of Iranian attacks, labeling them a "big sense of betrayal" after Qatar's attempts to mediate and maintain good relations. Despite Iran's claims that the missile strikes targeted American interests, the Qatari PM asserted that the evidence showed otherwise, with attacks hitting civilian and residential areas, including the vicinity of Hamad International Airport and vital infrastructure. He described the strikes as a "flagrant violation" of Qatar's sovereignty and international law. The Qatari PM revealed that the attacks included not only missiles but also drones and aircraft entering Qatari airspace, intercepted by the country's armed forces. He accused Tehran of an "escalatory approach" lacking genuine desire for de-escalation, and seeking to involve its neighbors in a conflict "that is not theirs". Qatar, which has historically acted as a mediator in the Middle East, finds itself directly targeted despite its efforts to foster dialogue and diplomacy. Qatar has long played a crucial role in mediating regional conflicts, including those between Israel and Hamas, and the United States and the Taliban. Despite maintaining open channels with Tehran and emphasizing neutrality, Qatar was struck shortly after the outbreak of war, hitting military facilities, civilian infrastructure, and even drinking water systems. The Prime Minister affirmed Qatar's right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and the capacity to protect the country and its people.
