Battlefield 6 Wins Game of Year
Battlefield 6 took home Game of the Year and Best PC Game at the UKIE Video Game Awards 2026. The shooter sold over 7 million units in its first three days—making it the biggest launch in franchise history and the top-selling title of 2025 in the US. Developed by Guildford's Criterion Games under the Battlefield Studios banner.
The award for Guildford-based Criterion Games is a significant milestone, marking their leadership role in the Battlefield franchise. Previously known for the *Burnout* and *Need for Speed* series, Electronic Arts shifted the studio's focus to the first-person shooter, even renaming it "Criterion - A Battlefield Studio" to reflect the new direction. *Battlefield 6*'s launch was not just the biggest in the franchise's history, but its first-month dollar sales in the US were the highest for any game since *Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II* in 2022. The game's 7 million units sold in three days far surpassed the first-week sales of previous entries like *Battlefield 2042* (4.23 million) and *Battlefield 1* (3.46 million). The game's multiplayer is considered a return to form for the series, praised for its refined gunplay and strategic depth. New features like the "Kinesthetic Combat System" for improved movement and a "Tactical Destruction System" that allows for greater environmental damage were highlighted by critics. The multiplayer launched with nine maps and a new "Escalation" mode. Conversely, the single-player campaign received a more lukewarm reception, with many critics finding it short and uninspired compared to the robust multiplayer offerings. Reviews pointed to a generic story and a lack of innovation as points of criticism for the campaign. At the UKIE Video Game Awards 2026, *Battlefield 6* was nominated for Game of the Year alongside *Atomfall*, *Mafia: The Old Country*, and *PowerWash Simulator 2*. For the Best PC Game award, it competed against *Atomfall*, *Jurassic World Evolution 3*, and *Still Wakes the Deep: Siren's Rest*. Following its successful launch, EA and Battlefield Studios have already rolled out a multi-phased Season 1 of free content. This includes new maps like Blackwell Fields and Eastwood, and new game modes such as the 4v4 "Strikepoint" and 8v8 "Sabotage." The success of *Battlefield 6* comes after the disappointing reception of its predecessor, *Battlefield 2042*. Under the leadership of Vince Zampella, the head of the overall Battlefield franchise, the development was a collaborative effort between multiple EA studios, including DICE, Motive, and Ripple Effect. Looking ahead, there are reports that Electronic Arts has ambitions to release Battlefield titles more frequently, potentially on an annual basis, to compete more directly with the Call of Duty franchise. However, these plans are reportedly several years away from being implemented.
