Ukraine War Reaches Stalemate

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has largely stalled, with frontlines static amid a grim war of attrition. In response to the stalemate, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called for British troops to be sent to Kyiv. Meanwhile, the UN's refugee chief reiterated that diplomacy is the only viable path to peace.

- The war has resulted in massive casualties, with combined Russian and Ukrainian military losses approaching 2 million by some estimates. One January 2026 report estimated Russian casualties (killed, wounded, and missing) at nearly 1.2 million and Ukrainian casualties between 500,000 and 600,000. - Russia's territorial gains have been minimal and have come at an immense cost; since the start of 2024, its forces have seized less than 1.5 percent of Ukrainian territory. In major offensives, the average Russian advance has been between 15 and 70 meters per day. - The conflict has placed Russia's economy under significant strain. To finance the war, the Kremlin has raised taxes and borrowed heavily from domestic sources, with approximately half its budget now dedicated to the armed forces, military industry, and security. - Ukraine's war effort is heavily reliant on international support. Since January 2022, the United States and the European Union have provided approximately $175 billion and $197 billion in aid, respectively. - The United Kingdom has been a leading European donor, pledging a total of £21.8 billion in support since February 2022, with over £13 billion designated for military financing. The UK also hosts a major training program for Ukrainian forces, which has trained 58,000 personnel to date. - Key battles have devolved into protracted sieges for cities with significant symbolic value, such as Bakhmut and Avdiivka. After capturing Avdiivka in February 2024, Russian forces began a slow, grinding offensive toward the logistics hub of Pokrovsk. - In response to the deadlock on land, Ukraine has increasingly used long-range drones and missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia, including military sites and oil infrastructure.
