Solana Pushes Mobile Stack to Other Phones
Solana Mobile is expanding its strategy beyond its own hardware. After selling 200,000 of its own devices, the company announced it is bringing its crypto-native 'Solana Mobile Stack' (SMS) to other Android hardware manufacturers, aiming to make web3 features more widely available.
The Solana Mobile Stack (SMS) is an open-source toolkit for Android, featuring key components like the Seed Vault, a secure custody protocol that separates private keys from the rest of the Android OS. It also includes the Mobile Wallet Adapter for connecting apps to wallets and a decentralized app store that bypasses the fees and restrictions of Google and Apple. This software push follows a rollercoaster hardware journey. The first Solana phone, the "Saga," initially saw disappointing sales of only around 2,500 units. However, sales skyrocketed after a memecoin airdrop (BONK) given to phone owners became more valuable than the device itself, leading to a sell-out and resale prices as high as $5,000 on eBay. Learning from the Saga, Solana Mobile's second device, now named "Seeker," adopted a new strategy. Priced lower than the Saga, the new phone quickly amassed over 100,000 pre-orders, driven by the anticipation of future token rewards and a built-in referral system. The ecosystem is further incentivized by the SKR token, the native asset of Solana Mobile. A significant portion of the token supply is allocated for airdrops to Seeker users and developers, aiming to foster a self-sustaining economy where participants govern the platform and share in the value created. Solana's strategy is to create a vertically integrated mobile ecosystem optimized for web3, from hardware to a native dApp store. By offering tools like Solana Pay integration and removing platform fees for developers, Solana aims to attract builders and users away from the current mobile duopoly.
