AWS to wind down select services
A report collected by ITmedia NEWS says AWS will end acceptance of new App Runner instances on April 30 and plans to discontinue RDS Custom for Oracle within about a year, signaling migration work for affected customers. The announcements are flagged as items backend teams should account for when planning infra changes and migrations. (x.com)
Amazon Web Services is closing App Runner to new customers on April 30, 2026, and ending support for Relational Database Service Custom for Oracle on March 31, 2027. (docs.aws.amazon.com, aws.amazon.com) App Runner is Amazon Web Services’ managed service for running containerized web apps without handling most of the underlying infrastructure. Amazon Web Services says existing App Runner customers can keep using the service and create new resources after April 30, but the company does not plan new features. (aws.amazon.com, docs.aws.amazon.com) For customers that want a replacement, Amazon Web Services points to Amazon Elastic Container Service Express Mode, a newer option that deploys container apps with automated defaults. Amazon Web Services published migration guidance that uses a blue-green cutover, with old and new services running side by side while traffic shifts through Domain Name System routing. (aws.amazon.com, docs.aws.amazon.com) Relational Database Service Custom for Oracle is a managed Oracle database offering for workloads that still need operating-system and database-level access. Amazon Web Services says existing customers can use it until March 31, 2027, and then will lose access to database instances, snapshots, custom engine versions, and the service console. (aws.amazon.com, docs.aws.amazon.com) Amazon Web Services recommends that Relational Database Service Custom for Oracle customers move those workloads to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, rather than to another managed database service. The company says the shutdown does not affect Relational Database Service for Oracle or Relational Database Service Custom for SQL Server. (aws.amazon.com, docs.aws.amazon.com) The changes land as Amazon Web Services trims some older or narrower services while steering users toward broader platforms. Amazon WorkMail, the company’s managed email and calendar service, carries the same March 31, 2027 end-of-support date in current documentation. (docs.aws.amazon.com, docs.aws.amazon.com) For engineering teams, the immediate deadline is April 30 for any organization that has not yet adopted App Runner but was considering it for new projects. The longer deadline is March 31, 2027 for Oracle workloads that depend on Relational Database Service Custom, where migration planning now includes servers, storage, backups, and Oracle-specific configuration. (docs.aws.amazon.com, aws.amazon.com) Amazon Web Services is not turning off every affected product at once, but it has put dates on two of them and named the migration paths. That leaves customers with a short runway for new App Runner adoption decisions and about 11 months for Relational Database Service Custom for Oracle exits. (docs.aws.amazon.com, aws.amazon.com)
