Salmon Recalled Over Listeria Risk
A lot of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club has been recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Consumers who purchased the product are advised to check lot numbers and purchase dates to mitigate health risks.
The recall of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon was initiated by the supplier, Slade Gorton & Co., Inc., after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found *Listeria monocytogenes* in a random sample. The affected 2-lb bags are from lot number 3896 and were sold between January 31 and February 7, 2026, in seven states: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. *Listeria monocytogenes* is a bacterium that can survive and grow even in refrigerated temperatures. While healthy individuals may only experience short-term symptoms like fever, nausea, and diarrhea, the infection can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, adults over 65, and those with weakened immune systems, potentially leading to serious complications. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. The Boston-based supplier, Slade Gorton & Co., Inc., is currently investigating the source of the contamination. The company has faced previous food safety recalls, including a 2017 recall for undeclared milk in breaded tilapia products and a recall of frozen langostinos due to potential Listeria contamination. Contamination of salmon with *Listeria* often occurs during processing rather than from the raw fish itself. Areas such as brining and slicing equipment can be sources of contamination within a processing facility. Studies have shown that *Listeria* can persist in processing environments, making rigorous sanitation crucial. BJ's Wholesale Club, which sells the Wellsley Farms brand, is directly contacting members who may have purchased the recalled salmon. The retailer has experienced other recalls of its Wellsley Farms products in the past, including for undeclared allergens in mini quiches and potential Salmonella in frozen shrimp. Consumers who have purchased the recalled salmon are advised not to consume it. They can call 1-888-628-0730 for instructions on how to obtain a full refund and what to do with the product.
