New Mythic Hiking Trail Network in Greece
The Peloponnese region of Greece is developing the Mythic Trail Network, an interconnected system of hiking paths designed to be culturally immersive. Once complete, it is expected to become Europe's largest trail network of its kind. The project aims to blend outdoor activity with the region's rich history and mythology.
The project is a significant expansion of a proven concept, building on the success of the 75-kilometer Menalon Trail in Arcadia. The Menalon Trail was the first in Greece to be certified by the European Ramblers Association, setting a precedent for quality and safety that the larger network aims to replicate across the entire Peloponnese region. Overseen by the Region of Peloponnese, the "Upgrading and Enrichment of Existing Hiking Routes" project has a budget of approximately €2.95 million, drawn from the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility. The development is being managed by the Parnonas S.A. Development Organization, with an expected completion timeline of roughly one year from its early 2025 start. The network will span over 1,729 kilometers, integrating 700km of revived historic mule paths with 1,000km of new trails. This extensive system is designed to connect the Isthmus of Corinth with iconic landmarks like Cape Maleas and the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae. A key aspect of the initiative is its reliance on local communities and social cooperatives for trail maintenance and promotion. This community-driven approach, involving 22 hiking clubs and local groups, aims to foster sustainable tourism and distribute economic benefits into more rural areas of the peninsula. The cartography for this large-scale project is being handled by Anavasi Editions, a company specializing in detailed hiking maps of Greece. This network is part of a broader national initiative by the Greek Environment Ministry to create a nationwide system of trails, promoting ecotourism and highlighting areas within the Natura 2000 protected network. The trails will be enriched with storytelling elements focusing on local history, mythology, and gastronomy to create a comprehensive cultural experience.
