Fibocom Unveils AI-Powered Cash Register

The global AI in retail market is projected to reach over $45 billion by 2030, with AI applications expected to save the industry approximately $340 billion annually through process optimization. This explosive growth underscores a significant shift, with around 90% of retailers already using AI in some capacity and planning to increase their investment. Fibocom's new system leverages MediaTek's latest Genio 720 and 520 platforms, which are built on a power-efficient 6nm process. These chips feature an octa-core CPU and a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) delivering up to 10 TOPS, enabling the cash register to run complex AI models directly on the device. This "edge AI" approach ensures faster response times and enhances data privacy by minimizing reliance on the cloud. The on-device AI can handle tasks like voice interaction, inventory forecasting, and visual recognition for things like facial payment and behavior analysis. The system can also drive 4K or even 5K ultra-HD screens, making it suitable for digital signage and other immersive visual experiences in a retail setting. This move is part of a broader trend of integrating advanced technology at the point of sale. Modern smart POS systems already facilitate various payment methods like QR codes and facial recognition, and AI enhances this by enabling features like automatic food recognition in restaurants or batch reading of RFID tags in unmanned stores. Fibocom, founded in 1999, has a history of providing wireless modules for smart retail, aiming to transform conventional POS machines into multifunctional terminals.
