*Final Fantasy VII Rebirth* is the second installment in a planned trilogy remaking the original 1997 game. The first, *Final Fantasy VII Remake*, focused on the Midgar section of the story and was released in 2020. Development for *Rebirth* began in November 2019, prior to *Remake's* release. *Rebirth* expands upon the gameplay of *Remake*, blending real-time action with strategic and role-playing elements. New features include Synergy Skills and Abilities, as well as a revamped weapon upgrade system. The game also introduces Folios, a system reminiscent of *Final Fantasy X*'s Sphere Grid, allowing players to customize their characters' combat styles. The game takes place immediately after the events of *Remake*, following Cloud and his party as they leave Midgar. Their journey takes them across the Planet to stop the Shinra corporation and confront Sephiroth. The game was made semi-open world based on player feedback from the first installment. *Final Fantasy VII Rebirth* launched as a PlayStation 5 exclusive on February 29, 2024. Versions for Windows, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S have been released since. Despite positive reviews, initial sales of *Rebirth*, along with *Final Fantasy XVI*, did not meet Square Enix's expectations.
