GM's Hybrid Corvette ZR1X Breaks NHRA
GM's hybrid Corvette ZR1X is dominating discussions for shattering NHRA street car drag racing rules with absurd speed capabilities. The car features F1-inspired tech including active aero/DRS rear wing, carbon monocoque construction, and set a Nürburgring record of 6:29.09 — though the race engine needs rebuilding every 50,000 km.
The NHRA's Street Legal rules prohibit production cars without a roll cage from running a quarter-mile faster than 9.0 seconds or exceeding 150 mph. The Corvette ZR1X, however, recorded an official quarter-mile time of 8.675 seconds at 159.57 mph at US 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan. Even on an unprepared track, the car has clocked 9.2 seconds at 155 mph, still surpassing the speed threshold. This blistering acceleration is achieved through a hybrid all-wheel-drive system combining a twin-turbo 5.5-liter LT7 V8 engine producing 1,064 horsepower with a 186-horsepower electric motor on the front axle. This results in a total combined output of 1,250 horsepower, enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 1.68 seconds. The Nürburgring lap time of 6:29.09 mentioned is that of the Mercedes-AMG One; the Corvette ZR1X actually set a lap time of 6:49.275 around the Nordschleife. This time makes it the fastest American production car to ever lap the circuit, beating the Ford Mustang GTD's time of 6:52.072. The standard, non-hybrid ZR1 also beat the Mustang with a time of 6:50.763. Notably, the record-setting Nürburgring laps were not completed by professional racing drivers, but by GM's own vehicle dynamics engineers. Drew Cattell was behind the wheel of the ZR1X, Brian Wallace drove the ZR1, and Aaron Link piloted the Z06 to a time of 7:11.826. The ZR1X's performance is further enhanced by an optional ZTK Performance Package, which includes a stiffer suspension setup and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires. A carbon fiber aero package can also be added, generating 544 kg (over 1,200 lbs) of downforce at top speed. To manage its extreme power, the ZR1X is equipped with the largest carbon ceramic brakes ever offered on a Corvette, featuring 16.5-inch rotors with 10-piston front calipers and 6-piston rear calipers. The car also features an electric-only "Stealth Mode," allowing for quiet travel for 4-5 miles at speeds up to 45 mph.
