Fremont to Host FOG Holi Festival
The FOG Holi 2026, an annual Festival of Colors, is scheduled for March 7th at Washington High School in Fremont. The popular Bay Area cultural event celebrates spring with the traditional throwing of colored powders. Tickets are available for $5, with organizers expecting a large community turnout.
The FOG Holi festival is organized by the Federation of Indo-Americans of Northern California (FIA), a group that aims to unite the diverse Indian-American community. Beyond Holi, the FIA also hosts other major cultural events, including celebrations for India's Independence Day and Republic Day. The organization's motto is to help the Indian community realize the American dream while honoring their cultural roots. Holi is an ancient Hindu festival that marks the arrival of spring and celebrates the triumph of good over evil. The tradition of throwing colored powders, or gulal, symbolizes the blossoming of love and the joyful letting go of inhibitions. The festival is also a time for forgiveness, renewing relationships, and celebrating as a community. The night before the main color festival, a tradition called Holika Dahan often takes place, where a bonfire is lit to symbolize good overcoming evil. While the FOG event focuses on the daytime color play, the historical and spiritual roots of Holi add a deeper significance to the celebration. The festival is celebrated worldwide by the Indian diaspora. The Fremont event is one of the largest Holi celebrations in the Bay Area, with past events drawing over 5,000 attendees. To ensure safety, organizers provide organic, eco-friendly colors and do not permit outside colors or food. The celebration includes nonstop Bollywood music from DJs, dance performances by local studios, and a variety of food vendors. Washington High School, the venue for the event, is a central part of the Fremont community and hosts numerous cultural and community events throughout the year. The FOG Holi festival is a family-friendly event, with free admission for children under four. The Bay Area hosts a variety of other Holi celebrations in addition to the one in Fremont. These range from rooftop parties in San Francisco to large-scale musical festivals in Santa Clara featuring live performances by artists like Kanika Kapoor. This variety of events highlights the widespread and diverse celebration of Holi across the region.
