Fremont to Get Autonomous Robot Delivery
Food delivery via autonomous robots is coming to Fremont, California. The initiative reflects a growing trend in urban logistics to use automated vehicles for convenient and efficient service. While specific details on the rollout are not yet public, the move is expected to reshape local commerce.
The food delivery service behind the new initiative is DoorDash, and their robot is named "Dot". These all-electric robots are manufactured locally in Fremont in a partnership between DoorDash Labs and advanced manufacturer Sonic Manufacturing, a move praised by Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan. The rollout is planned in phases, starting with an initial deployment of three robots that will be closely monitored by human operators. If the initial phase is successful, the program will expand to as many as 30 robots operating under remote monitoring. The city has the ability to pause or revoke DoorDash's encroachment permit if any safety or compliance issues arise. The public will get its first look at the "Dot" robots during Fremont's 4th Annual Restaurant Week, which runs from March 6 to 15, 2026. The robot's inaugural delivery is scheduled for the kickoff event on March 5 at Fremont Bank. Dot is designed to navigate city streets using a combination of lidar, cameras, and radar. The robots have a maximum speed of 5 mph on sidewalks, 16 mph in bike lanes, and 20 mph on neighborhood streets. The initial service area will cover the Downtown/Central, Centerville, and Irvington neighborhoods. Key travel corridors for the robots will include Fremont Boulevard, Walnut Avenue, Mowry Avenue, Stevenson Boulevard, and Paseo Padre Parkway. This isn't DoorDash's first deployment of autonomous delivery robots; the company already operates them in the Phoenix, Arizona metro area. The Fremont pilot program is part of a broader push by companies like DoorDash and Starship Technologies to integrate autonomous robots into urban logistics.
