Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative Relaunches with 250+ Members

The Net Zero Asset Managers (NZAM) Initiative has officially relaunched, with over 250 asset managers recommitting to climate-focused investment goals. The move signals sustained pressure from institutional investors for public companies to adopt credible, science-based climate strategies and provide robust ESG disclosures. The relaunch comes as leaders like former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant call for making AI "climate-compatible" through renewable energy.

- The relaunch follows a year-long pause and strategic review prompted by political and regulatory pressure in the U.S., including accusations of antitrust violations from some state Attorneys General. This led to the departure of some key members like BlackRock. - A key change in the updated Commitment Statement is the removal of the explicit requirement for signatories to achieve net zero by 2050, aiming for a more flexible and globally inclusive framework that acknowledges different jurisdictional realities. Signatories now set their own independent targets and strategies. - The initiative, originally launched in December 2020 with 30 asset managers representing about $9 trillion in assets, grew to over 325 signatories with more than $57 trillion in assets under management by early 2025. - The revamped commitment streamlines the number of required actions from ten to seven, focusing on core levers available to asset managers. It continues to be anchored in the goals of the Paris Agreement. - Governance of the initiative is managed by six founding partner investor networks: the Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC), CDP, Ceres, the Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC), the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). - Ahead of the relaunch, a group of more than 50 asset owners, representing over $3.7 trillion in assets, issued a public statement urging asset managers to participate in the initiative.
