LA's Tech Scene Attracting Bay Area Firms

Los Angeles is increasingly becoming a destination for tech companies looking to expand or relocate from the Bay Area. Panelists at the L.A. TECH 24 event noted that access to creative talent and top universities is a major draw. Recruiters add that LA's tech hiring is more relationship-driven, with a strong emphasis on referrals and local networking.

The LA tech scene, often called "Silicon Beach," is now the third-largest startup ecosystem in the United States. The region hosts over 1,500 tech companies and is home to more than 375,000 tech workers. Major Bay Area tech firms have established massive footprints in Los Angeles County, with Google, Netflix, and Amazon each occupying over one million square feet of real estate. Apple has also significantly expanded its presence in the region. While the Bay Area still dominates in overall venture capital, Southern California companies attracted $17 billion in VC investment in one recent year. In the first quarter of 2025, the L.A. area alone saw $3.1 billion in funding across 144 deals, a 15% increase from the previous year. Los Angeles has solidified its position as a major hub for artificial intelligence, ranking as the fourth-largest market for AI talent in North America with over 13,000 specialists. The sector's growth is fueled by both established companies and AI-focused startups like Beyond Limits, which develops cognitive AI for industrial use. The region's deep roots in aerospace have given rise to a booming defense tech sector. Companies like SpaceX in Hawthorne and defense firm Anduril Industries, which raised $2.5 billion in a Series G round, are major players. The U.S. Space Force even operates a field command site in Los Angeles. A key driver of the migration is the significant cost difference. The median home value in San Francisco is over $1.4 million, compared to approximately $752,000 in Los Angeles. Average rent in San Francisco is nearly 50% higher than in LA.
