Grand Rapids Coffee Chain Expanding to Ferndale
Grand Rapids-based Madcap Coffee will open a fourth location in Ferndale at 430 W Nine Mile Road. The opening date has yet to be announced. This expands the Michigan-based coffee company's presence in metro Detroit.
Madcap Coffee, founded in 2008 in Grand Rapids, is opening its first Ferndale location, marking its continued expansion in metro Detroit. The company was started by Trevor Corlett, an award-winning barista, and has locations in Grand Rapids and Detroit. Madcap's mission is to highlight the craftsmanship and human element in every cup, transforming coffee into an elevated experience. The Ferndale shop will feature a barista training space visible to patrons and offer a chef's-table-style coffee tasting experience. Customers will be able to purchase tickets for coffee flights paired with food items. The new space, designed in partnership with Detroit architect Black Helmut, will have a "cocktail bar vibe" with tiered seating and an outdoor patio. Trevor Corlett expects to invest around $250,000 in the Ferndale location, which will occupy an 1,800-square-foot retail space that has been vacant since 2019. The cafe will seat around 35 people. Madcap had been in talks with FerndaleHaus for several years before signing a lease in October. Madcap's Detroit presence began in 2019 with a shop in the Shinola Hotel. The company sells hot and cold lattes, bagged roasts, and apparel. Madcap sources coffee through direct relationships with producers worldwide and roasts its beans in Grand Rapids.
