US Half Marathon Chaos Resolved

Race organizers will compensate three leading women runners who were led off course around mile 12 at the USATF Half Marathon Championship in Atlanta after a police emergency caused the official lead vehicle to misdirect them. Officials clarified the course error cost the athletes their shot at the title, triggering intense discussion about event management and athlete support in competitive running.

The lead runner, Jess McClain, will receive the equivalent of the first-place prize money, which is $20,000. The two other affected athletes, Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat, will split the combined second and third-place prize money. This totals $39,000 in compensation from the race organizers, the Atlanta Track Club. The error occurred when a police officer assigned to the race had to respond to an "officer down" call after a fellow officer was struck by a vehicle near the course. This left a key intersection unattended, and a replacement officer, unfamiliar with the route, inadvertently led the lead vehicle and the runners astray. The detour added approximately a kilometer, or about an extra half-mile, to their race. Molly Born, who was declared the winner with a time of 1:09:42, has publicly stated, "I don't really feel like the U.S. champion." She has also indicated that she does not plan to accept a spot on the world championship team if offered, believing she did not fairly earn it. Following the incident, Jess McClain finished in 9th place, while Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat finished 12th and 13th, respectively. An appeal to alter the official race results was denied by USA Track & Field (USATF), which stated that while the course was inadequately marked, there is no provision in the rulebook to change the order of finish. The misdirection cost the three athletes a potential spot on Team USA for the World Road Running Championships. However, USATF has stated that the team is not officially selected until May and they will review the events carefully, leaving the selection open.
