Snowflake and OpenAI Launch AI Agents in $200M Deal

Snowflake and OpenAI are rolling out AI agents to over 12,600 enterprise customers as part of a new $200M agreement. The deal gives Snowflake users direct access to advanced AI models within the platform, aimed at accelerating use cases like risk scoring, claims triage, and underwriting automation.

This multi-year, $200 million partnership makes OpenAI's models, including the yet-to-be-released GPT-5.2, natively available within Snowflake's platform. Previously, access to OpenAI models was only available through an integration with Microsoft, but this deal establishes a direct, first-party relationship. The collaboration centers on Snowflake's Cortex AI, a suite of tools that enables users to build AI applications directly on their governed data. Developers can now call OpenAI models via SQL to analyze text, images, and audio, and business users can query data in natural language using the Snowflake Intelligence agent. This move intensifies the rivalry with competitors like Databricks, which offers its Lakehouse AI platform with tools for building generative AI applications, and Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform powered by its Gemini models. The focus for all these platforms is to become the central hub for enterprises to build secure, data-centric AI applications. For insurance and financial services, this integration enables the application of advanced models to sensitive data for fraud detection and risk assessment without that data leaving Snowflake's secure environment. Insurers like Aviva and Allianz already use AI to speed up complex claims assessments and have seen significant increases in fraud detection. The deal also reflects OpenAI's broader strategy of embedding its models within major enterprise platforms. This follows a recent, massive $50 billion strategic partnership with Amazon to make OpenAI models and agents available through AWS. In consumer industries, the technology powers applications similar to those used by fashion retailers for hyper-personalization and demand forecasting. For example, Stitch Fix uses generative AI to enhance styling services, while brands like The North Face have used AI chatbots to offer personalized shopping recommendations. Snowflake and OpenAI are also co-developing new features using OpenAI's Apps SDK and AgentKit. This is aimed at creating more sophisticated AI agents that can operate across various business systems, moving beyond simple data analysis to executing complex, multi-step tasks.
