Bangkok’s old royal quarter is marking 244 years of Rattanakosin with a five-day public festival, and the National Museum is running its program through April 26. (en.thairath.co.th) The museum’s schedule runs nightly from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., with the grand opening on April 23 and a closing-night Likay performance by the Chaiya Mitchai troupe on April 26. (en.thairath.co.th) Other National Museum events include Phleng Choi music on April 22, regional cultural performances and a Pong Lang band from Roi Et College of Dramatic Arts on April 24, and choral and folk music by Winit Suksa School from Lopburi on April 25. (en.thairath.co.th) The museum is one part of a larger city program the Culture Ministry calls “One Story, Three Areas,” spread across the National Museum Bangkok, Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park, and Wat Prayurawongsawat Worawihan. (thailand.prd.go.th) Rattanakosin is the era and historic capital founded on April 21, 1782, when King Rama I established Bangkok as the seat of the Chakri dynasty. The 2026 anniversary therefore lands 244 years after that founding date. (www.nationthailand.com) At the National Museum, the official theme is “Rattanakosin Royal Night,” with the grounds positioned as an after-dark heritage site rather than a daytime-only museum stop. (thailand.go.th) The Culture Ministry said the wider festival also includes a Night Museum experience, outdoor film screenings, human chess, Nang Yai shadow puppets, and a call for visitors to wear traditional Thai dress during the celebrations. (thailand.prd.go.th) At the museum, the outdoor cinema starts at 8 p.m. each night, with films including “Sawasdee Bangkok,” “Khun Chai The Cliche,” “The Stone: Real Buddha, Fake Man,” and “Red Envelope Ghost.” (en.thairath.co.th) The site is inside the Sanam Luang area, and Thairath recommends arriving by MRT via Sanam Chai station or by Chao Phraya Express Boat via Tha Chang or Tha Phra Chan because evening traffic on Rattanakosin Island can be heavy. (en.thairath.co.th) For Bangkok, the anniversary turns a date on the royal calendar into a public history program: museum galleries at night, live performance in the courtyard, and the capital’s founding story staged in the district where it began.
