James Beard nominations update

The 2026 James Beard Award winners will be announced June 15, and Chicago remains the awards' home through 2028 — a focal point for restaurant recognition this year. Notably, Miami received no nominations for 2026 despite its rising profile, while Michigan already had six semifinalists and two Cincinnati chefs — Sarah Dworak (Sudova) and Jeffery Harris (Nolia Kitchen) — are among regional finalists, highlighting stronger national attention on the Midwest ( ).

Miami built a national food reputation on Michelin stars and splashy openings, then landed zero finalists on the 2026 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ballot released March 31. The winners will be announced June 15 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. (jamesbeard.org, jamesbeard.org, miaminewtimes.com) That shutout was not because Miami never got in the door. In January, Michael Beltran of Ariete, Maria Teresa Gallina and Nicolas Martinez of Recoveco, Amara at Paraiso, and Bar Bucce all made the semifinalist round, but none survived to the final nominee list. (jamesbeard.org, miaminewtimes.com) Florida still appears on the final ballot, just not through Miami. Bryce Bonsack of Rocca in Tampa and Maria La Mota and Chason Spencer of Chancho King in Jacksonville were the only Florida finalists in Best Chef: South, a region that also covers Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Puerto Rico. (miaminewtimes.com, jamesbeard.org) At the same time, the Great Lakes map is getting louder. Cincinnati put two chefs into the five-person Best Chef: Great Lakes final slate: Sarah Dworak of Sudova and Jeffery Harris of Nolia Kitchen. (cincinnati.com, wvxu.org, citybeat.com) That category covers Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, so two Cincinnati finalists means one city took 40 percent of the spots in a four-state region. Another Ohio chef, Vinnie Cimino of Cleveland, also made the list, leaving the remaining two finalist spots to Chicago chefs. (614now.com, cincinnati.com) Chicago is still the room where all of this gets decided in public. The James Beard Foundation says the 2026 ceremony is in Chicago on June 15, and local outlet WTTW reports the city will remain the awards’ home through 2028. (jamesbeard.org, news.wttw.com) Chicago also has finalists of its own, including Bailey Sullivan of Monteverde Restaurant & Pastificio for Emerging Chef. WTTW says Norman Fenton of Cariño and Jake Potashnick of Feld are finalists too, which keeps Chicago at the center of both the stage and the scoreboard. (jamesbeard.org, news.wttw.com) Michigan is getting another kind of national validation at the same moment. CBS Detroit reported on April 8 that Michelin is now scouting restaurants for a new Michelin Guide American Great Lakes edition, with the first guide set to be revealed in 2027. (cbsnews.com) Put those pieces together and the 2026 awards season looks less like a Miami coronation and more like a Midwest consolidation. Chicago is hosting, Cincinnati is sending multiple finalists, and Michigan is entering Michelin’s map just as James Beard attention keeps clustering around the Great Lakes.
