OpenAI Robotics Head Resigns Over Pentagon Deal
OpenAI's head of robotics, Caitlin Kalinowski, has resigned in protest of the company's new contract with the U.S. Department of Defense. Kalinowski, formerly of Meta, cited principles and concerns over military AI, surveillance, and autonomous weapons. Her high-profile departure ignites a major debate about ethical boundaries for leading AI research labs.
Caitlin Kalinowski, who joined OpenAI in November 2024 from Meta, specified that her resignation was a matter of "principle, not people." She argued that deploying AI for surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight or for autonomous weapons without human authorization required more deliberation than it received. Her primary issue was a "governance concern," stating the Pentagon deal was rushed "without the guardrails defined." OpenAI asserts that its agreement includes "red lines" that prohibit the use of its technology for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. However, the company had previously altered its usage policy in early 2024, removing a general prohibition on "military and warfare" applications. The company now says its multi-layered approach to safety is more robust than what rivals were offered. The deal with OpenAI materialized after rival AI lab Anthropic rejected a similar contract, citing concerns about the potential for mass surveillance and autonomous weaponry. In response, the U.S. Department of Defense designated Anthropic a "supply-chain risk," a move that would prevent Defense Department contractors from working with the company. This resignation echoes previous tech industry protests over military work. In 2018, thousands of Google employees protested Project Maven, a Pentagon AI program for analyzing drone imagery, leading Google to let the contract expire. Similarly, Microsoft has faced internal opposition over a $480 million contract to supply the U.S. Army with HoloLens headsets designed to increase soldiers' "lethality." The fallout from OpenAI's military contract has extended beyond employee departures. In the wake of the deal, rival Anthropic's chatbot Claude saw its U.S. downloads jump 240% in February, temporarily displacing ChatGPT as the number one free app on the Apple App Store. Kalinowski's exit also poses a challenge to OpenAI's robotics division, which has been developing a robot arm to perform household chores.
