OpenAI launches Workspace Agents

- OpenAI introduced Workspace Agents, designed to plug into Slack, Salesforce and other enterprise systems to automate tasks. - The product is framed as a successor to custom GPTs, aiming to manage fleets of agents across workplaces. - This positions OpenAI as an enterprise systems vendor focused on integration, governance and operationalising AI inside companies. OpenAI has launched workspace agents in ChatGPT, shifting its workplace product from custom chatbots to shared software that can act across business tools. (openai.com) OpenAI said on April 22, 2026 that the agents are powered by Codex, run in the cloud, and can handle multi-step tasks such as preparing reports, writing code, and responding to messages. The company said teams can use the same agent inside ChatGPT or Slack and improve it over time. (openai.com) On OpenAI’s business site, the company said the agents can automate workflows across Slack, Google Drive, Microsoft SharePoint and other enterprise tools, with admin controls and governance features. OpenAI’s app integrations page also lists systems including Salesforce, HubSpot, GitHub, Stripe and Intercom. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2) The product changes what OpenAI sells to companies. Custom GPTs mostly answered questions inside ChatGPT; workspace agents are built to take actions across systems that companies already use for sales, support, engineering and internal operations. (openai.com) (venturebeat.com) OpenAI has spent the past two months building that pitch. In February 2026, it introduced OpenAI Frontier, an enterprise platform for building, deploying and managing agents with shared context, onboarding, permissions and governance. (openai.com) The company is also tying the new agents to the rest of its enterprise stack. OpenAI says Frontier is designed to run “AI coworkers” on a single platform connected to systems of record, while ChatGPT Business now advertises “customizable, shareable workspace agents” as part of its plan. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2) OpenAI’s release notes say workspace agents are rolling out over the next few weeks to ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces, where users can build agents from templates or from scratch, preview them before publishing, share them internally, and run them on schedules. The same notes say eligible workspaces can connect agents to apps such as Google Drive, Google Calendar, Slack and SharePoint, and add custom Model Context Protocol servers. (help.openai.com) That rollout puts OpenAI more directly against software vendors that already sell workplace automation and agent tools inside their own products. OpenAI is now offering not just models, but a managed layer for permissions, integrations and day-to-day business workflows. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2) For companies that adopted custom GPTs as internal helpers, the next step is no longer a better chat window. It is software that can sit inside Slack, reach into Salesforce or SharePoint, and keep working after an employee logs off. (openai.com) (openai.com)
