The Witcher 3 Expansion Confirmed

Reliable insiders suggest a brand-new expansion is in the works for The Witcher 3, promising fresh content for longtime series fans. This would be the first major content addition to the game since the Blood and Wine expansion, potentially extending Geralt's story further.

The game's original two expansions set a high bar for post-launch content. "Hearts of Stone" launched in October 2015, offering a 10-hour storyline, followed by "Blood and Wine" in May 2016, which added a 20-hour-plus adventure in the entirely new region of Toussaint. Upon its release, developer CD Projekt Red referred to "Blood and Wine" as Geralt's "final mission" and the last expansion for the game. That expansion was a critical success, winning Best RPG at The Game Awards 2016 and is considered by many to be one of the best DLCs ever made. While not a full expansion, the game did receive a significant free "next-gen" update on December 14, 2022. This patch overhauled the game's graphics with features like ray tracing, improved textures, and also added a new quest and armor sets inspired by the Netflix series. The rumored new content is reportedly being developed by Fool's Theory, a Polish studio comprised of veteran developers who have previously worked on the series. This same studio is also publicly developing a full remake of the original 2007 *The Witcher* game in Unreal Engine 5. Speculation suggests this new expansion will bridge the narrative gap between *The Witcher 3* and the next mainline entry in the series, tentatively titled *The Witcher 4*. Some rumors point to a new region, while others suggest it will be set closer to existing areas like Velen. This comes as CD Projekt Red's primary focus shifts to the next saga in the Witcher franchise, internally codenamed "Project Polaris." The studio plans to release a new trilogy of Witcher games within a six-year window, all built on Unreal Engine 5 instead of their in-house REDengine.
