Crater Lake opens for spring

- Crater Lake National Park’s spring access is back, but only in a limited way: visitors can now drive to Rim Village while most of the park stays shut. - The key detail is what is still closed — North Entrance Road, the full Rim Drive, and all trails remain snow- or ice-covered into June or July. - That matters because “spring opening” sounds bigger than it is at Crater Lake, where heavy snow keeps the real summer road network offline.

Crater Lake is open for spring again — but at this park, that does not mean the whole place suddenly unlocks. It means the basic front door is open. You can get in via Highway 62, drive up to Rim Village, and get the big postcard view if weather cooperates. But the rest of the usual warm-season map is still mostly off-limits, because Crater Lake is still buried under a lot of snow. (nps.gov) ### So what actually opened? The practical change is access to Rim Village from the south side. The park’s current conditions page says Highway 62 through the park is open, the road from Park Headquarters to Rim Village is open, and the Steel Information Center is operating daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Rim Cafe and gift shop are open too, which tells you this is a real visitor-facing opening, not just a gate left unlocked. (nps.gov) ### What is still closed? A lot. North Entrance Road and Rim Drive are still closed for the season, and the park says they are not expected to reopen until mid- to late June or July 2026. Rim Visitor Center is closed for the season. Sinnott Memorial Overlook is closed for the season. The lodge, Mazama Village lodging and campground, gas pumps, and several other concession facilities are still shut as well. (nps.gov) ### Can you hike yet? Not really in the normal Crater Lake sense. The park says all trails are covered with snow and ice right now. That matters because a lot of visitors hear “spring opening” and picture short dry hikes around the rim. At Crater Lake, early May is still closer to late winter at higher elevations. The park’s May-and-June guidance basically says yes, you can reach the lake (nps.gov)snow. (nps.gov) ### Why is Crater Lake so different in spring? Because this park sits high and gets hammered by snow. The National Park Service flat-out describes Crater Lake as one of the snowiest inhabited places in the United States. That is why roads that look like ordinary scenic drives on a summer map become seasonal projects that need plowing, hazard clearing, and safety checks before cars can retu(nps.gov)ot the same thing. (nps.gov) ### What about the famous drive around the lake? That is the big catch. Scenic Rim Drive is the signature loop, but it is still closed. So if someone is planning the classic full-crater drive, this is too early. The park’s own visitor guidance for May and June says you can usually drive to Rim Village, but the road around the lake and the North Entrance may still be closed due to snow. (nps.go([nps.gov)Is anything else unusual this year? Yes — the lake-access trail is out of commission for a separate reason. Cleetwood Cove Trail, the only legal trail down to the lake, is closed for a rehabilitation project. So even after more of the park opens later, one of Crater Lake’s most distinctive experiences will still be disrupted while that work continues. (nps.gov))) ### What should a visitor assume right now? Assume this is a viewpoints trip, not a full summer trip. You can likely get the dramatic rim view, basic visitor services, and a quieter shoulder-season experience. But if your plan depends on the north entrance, the full rim loop, dry hiking trails, boat access, or overnight summer facilities, you are early. (nps.gov)ine hides a lot of asterisks. (nps.gov) ### Bottom line Crater Lake’s spring opening is real, but narrow. The view is back. The full park is not — at least not yet. (nps.gov)
