New Luxury LGBTQ+ Hotel Planned for Northalsted

Tryst Hospitality has announced plans for a new boutique hotel in Chicago's Northalsted neighborhood, designed to cater specifically to gay travelers. The project highlights a trend toward niche hospitality and creates new catering opportunities within LGBTQ+ districts.

- The hotel will be located at 3350-3352 N. Halsted St., the former site of the popular D.S. Tequila bar, which closed in November 2023 after 14 years. Tryst Hospitality, which acquired the property in 2024, plans to demolish the existing structure to build the five-story, 21-room hotel. - This project is one of two boutique hotels planned for the Northalsted area; the other is the 50-room Backbeat Hotel, which is further along in development and slated to open in 2028 at 3255 N. Halsted St. - Tryst Hospitality's founder and CEO, Tristan Schukraft, is also the founder of MISTR, a telehealth platform focused on HIV prevention, and has been actively acquiring and preserving historic LGBTQ+ venues across North America, including in Fire Island, Puerto Vallarta, and West Hollywood. - The hotel's design includes a restaurant, a nightclub, and a fully enclosed rooftop pool and bar, intended for year-round use while minimizing noise for neighbors. This creates a contained, all-season venue for private events and activations. - Tryst Hospitality has a stated commitment to community integration, with plans to partner with local LGBTQ+ nonprofits and minority-owned businesses as part of its "mindful luxury" approach. The project is currently in the early planning and community feedback phase, with meetings scheduled with the Northalsted Business Alliance and other neighborhood groups. - The rise of boutique hotels offers a new avenue for catering partnerships beyond large-scale hotel contracts. While many hotels have in-house catering, smaller, more specialized venues like The Guesthouse Hotel partner with external caterers such as Blue Plate to offer customized culinary experiences that match their unique brand. - Experiential dining is a key trend for 2026, with a focus on immersive "foodscapes" where the culinary design is integrated into the event's environment. This aligns with the luxury, design-forward positioning of the Tryst brand and presents an opportunity for caterers to create visually driven, shareable moments for social media. - The project taps into the growing market for luxury LGBTQ+ travel, which is valued at over $200 billion annually. The hotel's intimate, 21-room size allows for the potential of full buyouts, creating opportunities for exclusive, high-end catered events like brand launches, influencer retreats, or milestone celebrations.
