Belgium Seizes Russian 'Shadow' Tanker

In a significant move to enforce sanctions, Belgium has seized a Russian oil tanker in the North Sea with French naval support. The vessel is suspected of being part of the Kremlin's "shadow fleet," used to circumvent Western energy sanctions and fund Russia's war in Ukraine.

The seized vessel, identified as the Ethera, was intercepted in Belgium's exclusive economic zone in the North Sea while reportedly on its way back to Russia. Belgian special forces boarded the tanker during an overnight operation with helicopter support from the French Navy. The ship, which was flying the flag of Guinea, was escorted to the port of Zeebrugge after an inspection confirmed suspicions it was sailing under a false flag with falsified documents. Russia's "shadow fleet" is a sprawling network of hundreds of aging tankers with opaque ownership, used to transport its oil and evade international sanctions. Estimates on the fleet's size vary, with some sources suggesting it could be as large as 1,400 vessels. By mid-2024, this fleet was already transporting more than 70% of Russia's oil, significantly undermining the G7's oil price cap. These tankers often operate without proper insurance and are prone to mechanical failures, posing significant environmental risks to vital waterways. Beyond sanctions busting, these ships have been accused of involvement in damaging undersea infrastructure and could potentially be used for espionage or jamming radar signals. The seizure of the Ethera is part of a more assertive European stance against Russia's sanctions evasion tactics. Western sanctions, first imposed after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, are designed to cripple Russia's war funding by limiting its lucrative energy export revenues. International sanctions have reportedly deprived Russia of over $450 billion, equivalent to two years of war funding. The operation was praised by Ukrainian officials as a "resolute and justified action" to deprive Russia of war resources. Meanwhile, Russia has previously labeled the seizure of its tankers as an act of "piracy." A criminal investigation has been launched in Belgium, and the Russian captain of the Ethera has been questioned by investigators.
