Ultimate Road Trip Planning Guide

Automotive journalist Matt Farah shares two decades of insights for crafting the ultimate road trip, covering vehicle prep, route selection, and maximizing fun while minimizing stress. His advice includes planning but staying flexible, prioritizing comfort and safety, and seeking out unexpected discoveries along the way.

A successful road trip starts with an "anchor"—a primary reason for the drive, like visiting a national park, seeing a concert, or a track day. This destination becomes the central point around which the rest of the route is built, giving the journey a clear purpose. When mapping your route, use a computer rather than a phone for an easier experience. While Google Maps defaults to the fastest route, you should manually drag the blue line to explore more winding, scenic, or technically challenging back roads. Lock in these fun discoveries by adding waypoints. For group trips, a simple formula helps estimate travel time: for every hour of solo driving, add two to five minutes for each additional car in the group. The larger the group, the more critical it is to arrange details like parking and restaurant reservations well in advance. Vehicle choice plays a big role in the experience. Farah suggests that for their agility, comfort, and efficiency, you can't go wrong with a Porsche 911, Boxster/Cayman, or a Corvette. These models are consistently popular on professionally organized driving tours for a reason. Before departing, a thorough vehicle check is crucial. Inspect tire pressure and tread on all tires, including the spare. It's also important to test your brakes, all lights (headlights, brake lights, turn signals), and wipers to ensure they are in good working order. Plan for breaks at least every two hours to combat driver fatigue. Use these stops to stretch, walk around, and rehydrate. Scheduling these stops in advance and building them into your total travel time reduces the pressure to rush.
