Spain Border Changes Coming
New border control systems will be implemented this summer in Spain, Greece, and Portugal, potentially causing significant delays for British tourists. The changes are part of a broader EU initiative that may affect entry times — essential information for anyone planning a Mediterranean beach holiday this year.
The new automated border control system is called the Entry/Exit System (EES). Its phased introduction across 29 European countries, including Spain, began on October 12, 2025, with full operation expected by April 10, 2026. The system is designed to modernize and strengthen the security of the EU's external borders. EES will replace the manual stamping of passports for non-EU nationals on short stays. Instead, it will create a digital record of each traveler's entry and exit, logging their name, travel document, and the date and place of crossing. The primary goals are to identify individuals who overstay their authorized time and to help combat identity fraud. On their first entry into the Schengen area under the new system, travelers will need to register biometric data, specifically fingerprints and a facial image. This information will be stored for three years, meaning subsequent border crossings within that period should be faster as only a quick verification will be needed. Refusal to provide this data will result in denial of entry. While the long-term goal of the EES is to streamline border checks and reduce waiting times through automation and self-service kiosks, initial implementation may cause delays. Travelers are advised to be prepared for potentially longer waits at the border as the system is rolled out. This system is distinct from, but works in conjunction with, the upcoming European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). Expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026, ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization, similar to the U.S. ESTA, for citizens of visa-exempt countries. ETIAS will conduct pre-screening security checks before a traveler's journey begins.
