Wu-Tang's Oliver Grant Dies at 52
Wu-Tang Clan founding member Oliver "Power" Grant died at age 52 after a "courageous battle" with illness, just after the group received a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination. Grant was the executive producer behind Wu Wear brand and remembered as "a true fighter until the end". His death represents a major loss for hip-hop's most influential collective.
Oliver "Power" Grant, who grew up in Staten Island's Park Hill projects with members of the Wu-Tang Clan, was a foundational architect of the group's empire. He was a childhood friend of RZA's older brother and earned his nickname "Power" during a chess game with founding members, who said it represented the force needed to accomplish work. Grant made a crucial early investment that helped fund the group's first recordings, earning him an executive producer credit on every Wu-Tang Clan album, including their 1993 debut, *Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)*. Beyond his role as a producer, Grant was a visionary entrepreneur who expanded the Wu-Tang brand into new territories. In 1995, he launched the iconic clothing line Wu Wear, which is often regarded as one of the first artist-inspired fashion brands and predated later successes like Sean John and Baby Phat. Starting with mail-order sales, Wu Wear eventually opened four retail stores and was carried by major retailers like Macy's, reaching annual revenues of over $25 million at its peak. Grant's business acumen extended beyond fashion. In 1999, he produced the PlayStation video game *Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style*, a 3D fighting game that featured characters based on the group's members. He also ventured into acting, appearing in films such as the 1998 crime drama *Belly* and 1999's *Black and White*. The Wu-Tang Clan's recent nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame marks their first appearance on the ballot. The group was nominated for the Class of 2026 alongside other first-time nominees like Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, and Oasis. This recognition of their cultural impact and influence arrived just before Grant's passing.
