Venus Williams Gets Indian Wells Wild Card

Indian Wells 2026 kicks off with nostalgic wild cards awarded to icons Venus Williams and Gael Monfils, with Williams continuing her farewell tour. Fans can also look forward to the return of Bianca Andreescu and the presence of Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner at the BNP Paribas Open.

Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has a complicated history with the BNP Paribas Open, having boycotted the tournament from 2002 to 2016. This followed an incident in 2001 where she and her family were subjected to racist taunts from the crowd. Her return to the tournament in 2016 marked a significant moment, and she has since reached the semifinals in 2018. Now 45 years old and ranked outside the top 450, Williams has had a difficult start to her 2026 season, with several first-round losses. Her participation in tournaments often relies on wild card entries, fueling speculation that this may be part of a farewell tour for the tennis legend. Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 Indian Wells champion, is making a comeback after a series of injury-plagued seasons. An emergency appendectomy in February 2025 further delayed her return to the court. Andreescu became the youngest woman to win at Indian Wells since Serena Williams in 1999 when she captured the title on her debut. For Novak Djokovic, a five-time champion at Indian Wells, the 2026 tournament presents an opportunity to bounce back from a challenging start to the year. The 24-time major champion suffered early exits in both the Australian Open and at Indian Wells in 2025, expressing frustration with his level of play. Meanwhile, World No. 2 Jannik Sinner arrives at Indian Wells seeking a title that has so far eluded him. The Italian reached the semifinals in his last two appearances, both times losing to Carlos Alcaraz. After reaching all four Grand Slam finals in 2025, Sinner is looking to close the ranking gap on his rival. Veteran Gaël Monfils is making his 16th and final appearance at the tournament as part of his farewell season. The 39-year-old Frenchman has twice reached the quarterfinals at Indian Wells, in 2016 and 2019.
