OpenAI rolls out GPT‑5 broadly

OpenAI began a staged global rollout of GPT‑5 to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team and Free users across web, mobile and desktop. OpenAI has started a staged worldwide rollout of GPT-5 in ChatGPT for Plus, Pro, Team, and Free users on web, mobile, and desktop. (help.openai.com) The change appeared in OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes and business release notes last week, which said GPT-5 is “slowly rolling out” and that Enterprise and Edu access is still coming. (help.openai.com, help.openai.com) OpenAI’s GPT-5 page says the model is “available to everyone,” while the help center describes a phased release by plan and platform, a common pattern when the company expands access gradually. (openai.com, help.openai.com) In ChatGPT, GPT-5 is the general-purpose system that answers prompts directly and can switch into longer reasoning when a task is harder. OpenAI described earlier GPT-5 releases as the default model replacing older options for signed-in users. (openai.com, help.openai.com) The rollout lands after several model changes in early 2026. OpenAI’s release notes say GPT-5.1 models were retired on March 11, 2026, and GPT-5.4 Thinking arrived in ChatGPT on March 5, 2026. (help.openai.com) For paid users who hit limits, OpenAI said GPT-5.4 mini will serve as a fallback for GPT-5.4 Thinking. The company also said GPT-5 Thinking mini will be removed as a selectable model within 30 days of that update. (help.openai.com) The other part of the update is about outside services inside ChatGPT. OpenAI has renamed “connectors” as “apps,” and those integrations let ChatGPT pull from or act on tools such as Box, Notion, Linear, and Dropbox. (help.openai.com, help.openai.com) Those apps are not being turned on the same way for every workplace plan. OpenAI’s help center says apps remain default off for Enterprise plans and default on for Business plans, with admins reviewing them in workspace settings. (help.openai.com, help.openai.com) OpenAI’s company knowledge feature uses the same admin gate. Its documentation says Enterprise and Edu admins must enable apps before teams can use company knowledge, while Business workspaces get apps enabled by default; the feature is currently limited to ChatGPT on the web. (help.openai.com) The result is a split rollout: broader GPT-5 access for consumer and team accounts now, with tighter controls still in place for schools and large companies that want admins to approve external integrations first.
