Bengaluru Receives Infrastructure Funding
The city of Bengaluru has received ₹512.68 crore as part of a larger ₹2,245 crore fund from the Karnataka state government. The funds are earmarked for various infrastructure and development projects across the city to address urban challenges and support ongoing initiatives.
- The funding is part of the "Brand Bengaluru" initiative, which has a total budget of ₹1,790 crore for 33 infrastructure projects. This initiative is a comprehensive urban development plan aimed at transforming the city into a premier global business hub. - A significant portion of the infrastructure drive is aimed at alleviating traffic congestion, with plans for a 40.5-kilometer double-decker flyover estimated to cost ₹8,916 crore. Additionally, two large tunnel roads, a North-South corridor from Hebbal to Silk Board and an East-West corridor from KR Puram to Nayandahalli, are planned at a cost of ₹40,000 crore. - The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will see its annual funding more than doubled, from ₹3,000 crore to ₹7,000 crore, to address foundational civic issues like roads, drains, and sewage systems. - Public transportation is a key focus, with the Namma Metro network set to expand by an additional 98.60 kilometers over the next two years. The Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project, a 148-kilometer network with 58 stations, is also in progress with a budget of ₹15,767 crore. - The funding also allocates resources for environmental projects, including the rejuvenation of 14 lakes with a budget of ₹35 crore and an additional ₹234 crore for the restoration of Varthur and Bellandur Lakes. - To enhance the city's aesthetic and community spaces, the plan includes creating "Urban Village Squares" to transform busy junctions into pedestrian-friendly hubs with greenery and art installations. - The state government is also promoting Bengaluru as a hub for electric vehicle manufacturing by establishing an international-standard testing track and an EV cluster with shared infrastructure for ₹25 crore. - Several road development projects are underway, including the asphalting of 389 km of main and sub-arterial roads with an action plan of ₹694 crore. The Mahadevapura zone, a key tech corridor, is set to receive the highest allocation of ₹140 crore for 82 km of road length.
