Savannah Beach Town Ranks #1
Travel + Leisure named a beach town near Savannah as the number one beach destination in the U.S. — though they haven't specified which town yet. The ranking puts Georgia's coast ahead of traditional favorites like the Outer Banks and Florida Keys.
This isn't the first time Tybee Island has caught the eye of national publications. In May 2024, Travel + Leisure included Tybee's North Beach in its list of the top 25 beaches in the country. The magazine highlighted the area as a "coastal haven that's perfect for a quiet getaway." Just a 30-minute drive from historic downtown Savannah, Tybee Island offers five miles of public beaches. The island is a popular destination for locals and tourists, offering a wide range of activities from water sports to exploring the local seafood restaurants. One of its most iconic landmarks is the Tybee Island Light Station, Georgia's oldest and tallest lighthouse. Visitors can climb the 178 steps for panoramic views of the island and the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse complex also includes a museum housed in what were once the keepers' quarters. Beyond the beaches, the island has a rich history. Fort Pulaski National Monument, a well-preserved Civil War-era fort, is a major draw for history enthusiasts. The island also hosts various cultural events and festivals throughout the year. The local ecology is another significant attraction. Visitors can take dolphin-watching tours, explore the salt marshes via kayak, or visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center to learn about the coastal ecosystem. The island's North Beach is also part of the Colonial Coast Birding Trail.
