Venus Williams Out Early Again
Venus Williams' comeback bid hit another setback as she was defeated in the first round by Diane Parry at Indian Wells. Social media showed Parry ending Williams' run 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 in a three-setter. This marks another early exit for Williams as she continues to battle for form and fitness in her career's twilight.
The age gap between the two competitors was a significant 22 years, with Williams at 45 and Parry at 23. Their rankings also told a story of different career stages: Williams entered the tournament ranked 554th in singles, while Parry stood at 111th. This first-round exit continues a difficult stretch for Williams, who has a 0-5 win-loss record in singles for the 2026 season. Her comeback has been hampered by injuries, including a knee injury sustained at Wimbledon in 2023 that sidelined her for the remainder of that year. In July 2025, she also revealed she had undergone surgery for uterine fibroids. Indian Wells has a unique history for Williams. She has reached the semifinals three times (1998, 2001, 2018) but has never won the title. Famously, both Venus and her sister Serena boycotted the tournament for 14 years following a controversial default and the subsequent negative reaction from the crowd in 2001. Her opponent, Diane Parry, is a former junior world No. 1. One of the biggest wins of her professional career came at the 2022 French Open, where she defeated the defending champion and then-world No. 2, Barbora Krejčíková.
