Everest Bans Amateur Climbers

Nepal is cracking down on 'extreme tourism' at Mount Everest by banning amateur climbers, a move aimed at curbing selfie-driven overcrowding and preserving safety on the world's highest peak. The ban targets influencers and inexperienced climbers contributing to dangerous conditions.

- To receive a permit, climbers must now prove they have already summited at least one other Nepalese mountain over 7,000 meters high. This is a significant change from the past when, for many years, the main requirement was the ability to pay the permit fee. - The cost of a climbing permit for a foreigner during the peak spring season was increased by 36% in 2025, from $11,000 to $15,000. However, the total cost for an individual climber, including gear, travel, and guides, can range from $45,000 to over $90,000. - These new regulations follow one of the deadliest seasons on record in 2023, which saw 18 confirmed deaths. This was a sharp increase from the annual average of about 6 deaths over the past two decades. - In 2023, Nepal issued a record 478 climbing permits, contributing to dangerous "traffic jams" in the "death zone" above 8,000 meters, where climbers faced long waits in low-oxygen conditions. - Solo or independent expeditions are now banned, and all climbers must be accompanied by a licensed guide. Previously, elite climbers could undertake solo ascents. - Mountain tourism is a vital part of Nepal's economy, with climbing contributing to over 4% of the nation's total economy. The industry provides significant income for the Sherpa community, where a guide can earn up to $5,000 in a three-month season, compared to the national average income of $700 per year. - In addition to experience requirements, all climbers must now submit a recent medical certificate to prove their physical fitness for the demanding ascent. - Stricter environmental rules have also been implemented, requiring climbers to use biodegradable bags for human waste and carry down a minimum of 8 kg of trash.
