Bangkok's Dib Museum Opens Major Show
Bangkok's Dib Museum, which opened in December 2025 with over 1,000 works, is hosting '(In)visible Presence' until August 3, 2026. The exhibition represents one of the major new cultural institutions emerging in Southeast Asia. The museum's inaugural programming signals Bangkok's growing position as a regional art hub.
The '(In)visible Presence' exhibition showcases 81 works by 40 contemporary artists, exploring themes of memory and the unseen through a multi-sensory experience that includes sound and scent. The exhibition is a tribute to the museum's late founder, Petch Osathanugrah, and was brought to fruition by his son, Purat (Chang) Osathanugrah. Featured international artists include Anselm Kiefer, Lee Bul, Alex Katz, and Alicja Kwade, whose installation of 11 monumental stone globes, "Pars Pro Toto" (2020), is a centerpiece in the museum's courtyard. For many of the artists, this exhibition marks their first presentation in Thailand, fostering a global dialogue with local creators. The exhibition also prominently features significant Thai artists such as Montien Boonma, Somboon Hormtientong, and Pinaree Sanpitak. Sanpitak's "Breast Stupa Topiary" (2013), a series of stainless-steel forms, can be found on the upper terrace. Housed in a converted 1980s warehouse, the museum was redesigned by Kulapat Yantrasast of WHY Architecture in collaboration with Architects 49. The three floors of exhibition space are designed to evoke the Buddhist concept of enlightenment as visitors ascend. The name "Dib" is Thai for "raw" or "natural, authentic state," reflecting the museum's mission to present art without artifice. The institution is considered Thailand's first international contemporary art museum with its own global collection. The opening of the Dib Museum is a significant event in Bangkok's burgeoning art scene, joining other new institutions like the Bangkok Kunsthalle, which opened in January 2024. This growth is bolstered by events like the Bangkok Art Biennale, which has been running since 2018.
