TMNT Crosses into Magic: The Gathering
Magic: The Gathering has expanded with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themed card set, integrating the TMNT mythos into Magic's color pair system. The crossover brings fresh mechanics for players and collectors, while Marvel is also bringing Magic-inspired Spider-Man art to new comic variant covers.
The "Universes Beyond" initiative is Wizards of the Coast's strategy for bringing a wide range of external intellectual properties into the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This has previously included major franchises such as The Lord of the Rings, Warhammer 40,000, and Doctor Who. Future collaborations are planned with properties like Final Fantasy and a broader Marvel Super Heroes set. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover is being released through the "Secret Lair" series, a direct-to-consumer platform that offers limited-edition card sets with unique themes and art. The "Totally TubuLair Superdrop" is scheduled to go live on March 2, 2026, and features multiple smaller sets within the drop, including one focused on the Mighty Mutanimals and another on classic TMNT villains. This crossover introduces new game mechanics to Magic, including "Sneak," a variant of the existing Ninjutsu ability that allows players to put a creature onto the battlefield tapped and attacking for an alternative cost. Another new mechanic is "Mutagen," which allows players to create artifact tokens that can place +1/+1 counters on creatures, reflecting the Turtles' origin story. The TMNT Secret Lair includes several notable reprints of existing Magic cards re-themed with Turtles artwork. For example, the powerful commander card "Triumph of the Hordes" is reimagined as "Mutanimals United," and "Higure, the Still Wind" appears as "Shredder, Criminal Mastermind." The release also features brand-new cards based on characters like the four turtles and their allies. In a separate collaboration, Marvel Comics is releasing a series of variant covers for its comic books featuring artwork from the *Magic: The Gathering | Marvel's Spider-Man* crossover set. This initiative will see art that originally appeared on Magic cards gracing the covers of various titles in May. Comic book titles receiving these Magic-art variant covers include issues of *Amazing Spider-Man*, *Captain America*, *Fantastic Four*, and *X-Men*. This cross-promotional effort highlights the continuing integration of popular culture franchises into the world of collectible card games.
