Gauff Retires at Indian Wells
World No. 4 Coco Gauff retired from her Indian Wells match against Filipina Alex Eala due to a "scary" arm injury — only the second retirement in her professional career. Eala was leading 6-2 when Gauff withdrew, advancing to the Round of 16.
Gauff described the sensation in her left arm as a "weird pain" that started in the second game of the match. She later elaborated that it felt like a "firework was going off" and that her entire arm was "on fire," a sensation she had never experienced before. Medical staff suggested the issue might be nerve-related, and Gauff is scheduled for an MRI to determine the extent of the injury. The 21-year-old American took a medical timeout while trailing 5-2 in the first set, during which a trainer worked on her shoulder and arm. Despite the treatment and having her forearm wrapped during the set break, the pain intensified, prompting her to stop the match after 54 minutes. Gauff stated she would rather lose 6-0 than retire, but the unfamiliar and worsening pain made stopping the better choice. This was a rare occurrence for Gauff, marking the first time she has retired from a match since the 2022 Cincinnati Open. Despite the "scary" injury, she expressed optimism that it is not a long-term issue and hopes to be fit for the Miami Open, which begins in just over a week. The match was a significant step for 20-year-old Alex Eala, who is currently ranked World No. 32. The win marked a sharp reversal from her last encounter with Gauff just weeks ago in Dubai, where she was defeated 6-0, 6-2. The victory sends the rising star from the Philippines into the Round of 16 at Indian Wells for the first time, where she will face Czech player Linda Noskova.
